"Estimating a Joint Mode and Departure-Time Choice Model Accounting for Heterogeneous Schedule Preferences"

Abstract : Many transport policies can influence individuals’ choices regarding transportation mode and departure times for their trips. To effectively assess these policies, an understanding of the value of travel-time savings and the scheduling preferences of individuals is crucial. In this paper, we introduce a novel methodology designed to estimate a joint model of mode and departure-time choice. In the initial phase, we derive estimates for the distribution of desired arrival times at destination within the population. This is achieved by analyzing the arrival times of individuals experiencing no congestion. Then, these estimated distributions are integrated into a Mixed Nested Logit model to estimate the preference parameters of individuals. Our model is estimated using Bayesian techniques.
